Twirling Log
Before computerized rankings and online registration, baton twirlers tracked their competitive progress with small record books like this Official NBTA Twirling Log for 1968. Issued by the National Baton Twirling Association, the pocket-sized booklet served as a competitor’s personal record of contests attended, placements earned, and points accumulated throughout the season.
Inside, competitors recorded the date and location of each contest along with their results in solo, group, and strut events. The booklet also explained the NBTA point system, which awarded points based on placement and contest size. Larger Class AAA competitions counted for triple points, encouraging twirlers to compete at higher-level events as they advanced. Participants were instructed to bring the log to every sanctioned contest so meet officials could verify results and maintain an accurate record of their progress.
The reverse side features a color photograph of an NBTA national competition, capturing the pageantry that defined the organization during the 1960s. Hundreds of competitors fill the arena floor during opening ceremonies, offering a glimpse of the scale and excitement of national baton twirling events.
Although simple in appearance, these logs represent an important chapter in the history of baton twirling. They document the sport’s increasingly standardized competition system and preserve a tangible reminder of an era when every point, every contest, and every handwritten entry marked another step toward a competitor’s goals.
