Cloin Watts: Arizona’s Baton Twirling Champion of the 1950s

Cloin H. Watts was one of Globe High School’s most accomplished performers of the early 1950s, earning statewide recognition while still a student. Born in 1936, he began competing at a young age and quickly distinguished himself. By 1952, he had won the Arizona state championship, and he repeated that achievement in 1955. That same year, he placed third at the national level, marking him as one of the top competitors of his era.

At Globe High School, Watts served as drum major, a role he would continue in college. He later led marching bands at Arizona State College in Tempe and in Flagstaff, where he became part of the Lumberjack Marching Band under the direction of Dr. Donald Wolf, who played a key role in his collegiate path.

During this period, Watts was also active as an instructor. While still young, he taught students from Globe and nearby Miami through a local studio, working with boys and girls of various ages. His early involvement in teaching reflected both his reputation and demand within the community.

In addition to his work on the field, Watts appeared in motion pictures, including Bus Stop starring Marilyn Monroe and The Rounders with Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda. These appearances placed him among a small number of performers from his background to be featured in film during that period.

After his college years, Watts transitioned into business. By the 1960s, he was living in Tucson, where he co-owned and managed a restaurant. He later spent time in Palm Springs, California.

Watts died in October 1993 at the age of 57. He remains part of Globe High School’s history as a state champion, drum major, and performer whose career extended beyond Arizona.
