In September 1960, the University of Kentucky “Marching 100” band added a trio of majorettes to halftime performances. The trio included freshman Karen Shields, Susan Mendel, and Donna Wilson. It was the first time the university featured majorettes in the band since 1947, when they were cut. They returned after many years of public pressure and have been part of the band ever since.
In 1968, the band added a majorette line, the Kentucky Sweetheart Majorettes.
Check out our latest college twirler feature, The Kentucky Sweetheart Majorettes.

There were two male baton twirlers in the 1950’s as part of the UK marching band and performed. One of these was called a freshman phenom and is my wife’s uncle. He is David Dwight Otis. He had a full scholarship for baton twirling at UK.
Thank you, Alan! I will look him up and see about featuring him. Our male twirlers need support!!
