Irene Garza (1934-1960)


Irene Garza, a Texas school teacher and beauty queen, was murdered by John Feit in McAllen, Texas in 1960. Feit was a Catholic priest at the time and Garza, a devout Catholic, had gone to him for confession. Feit was not convicted of her murder until 2017. He died in 2020. 48 Hours covered the case extensively.

Garza was the first Latina twirler and drum majorette at McAllen High School. Her classmates voted her Band Queen in 1951. Several pictures of her in her majorette uniform are featured in the 1950 and 1951 McAllen High School yearbooks.

In 1958, she was crowned Miss All South Texas Sweetheart. She attended Pan American College where she was elected homecoming queen.
