The baton twirling community lost one of its most influential ambassadors today with the passing of Billie J. Pucciarello (1936-2026), known to generations of students simply as “Miss Billie.” A Galveston native and graduate of Ball High School, Pucciarello built an international reputation as a baton twirling instructor, dance educator, entrepreneur and mentor. During her senior year, she was head drum majorette. She went on to serve as feature twirler at Sam Houston State University.
Pucciarello’s family remembers her as someone who “touched countless lives through her passion, creativity and unwavering commitment to helping others shine.”
She opened her first dance school at just 11 years old, teaching tap and ballet in her family’s backyard before expanding into baton twirling. That early venture eventually grew into a Houston performing arts complex that included dance studios, a gymnasium, health club and boutique. Over the decades, she coached countless state, national and world champions while serving as national chairman of the USTA Achievement Program, helping shape instruction for generations of twirlers.
Pucciarello also played an important role in the sport’s pageant tradition through USTA’s Miss America of Baton Twirling program and was active in the Miss America pageant system, where she worked as a director, instructor and judge during her career.
Baton twirling was truly a family affair. Her daughters, Toni and Angela, and son, Darrell, all became champion baton twirlers and performed alongside their mother. Darrell later built his own distinguished career in dance and choreography, becoming an influential figure in the dance community and working with USA Gymnastics, extending the family’s impact beyond baton twirling.
According to her obituary, Pucciarello’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who remembered her for her generosity, warmth and the lasting impact she made on everyone she met.
