Chinese Moon Festival, 1941

The Chinese Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, featured majorettes marching in the Moon Festival Parade, August 1941. The festival was reportedly held in Hollywood or L.A’s Chinatown or both. It was one of the first fundraisers for United China Relief and took place fives months before Pearl Harbor. Getty Images has licensed and watermarked a video of the parade, which you can see below.

The majorette in this photo was a contestant in the Moon Festival Goddess competition. Her name is not noted in the record preserved by the late Los Angeles portrait photographer Dick Whittington.
