This photo of a little Black majorette was taken at the National Elks Convention in New York City in 1945. The photographer was the renowned John W. Mosley (1907-1969), a foremost photojournalist of 20th Century Philadelphia. He documented the “vitality of the Black community and life in the segregated city from the 1930s through the height of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
This photo appears on the cover of Miss Black America, a 2005 novel by Veronica Chambers.
